Officials don’t yet know if they will be able to get reimbursed for the local funds being used to pay for SNAP, but are exploring possible accounting moves to recoup some of the city’s investment in what’s supposed to be a federally funded program.

It is, of course, impossible to not recall what happened to former mayor Vincent Gray when he was investigated by the U.S. attorney for crimes related to his 2010 mayoral campaign. He was never charged with anything, but the investigation was an anchor on his term.

There is also this critical question: If Qatar was somehow bribing Bowser with the trip, what was it getting in return? Qatar did invest in D.C.'s City Center development, but that was before Bowser became mayor. www.washingtonpost.com/local/qatar-...

The investigation seems to build off of dogged reporting done by local ABC reporter Scott Taylor into who paid for Bowser's trip. As Taylor found, her staff wasn't particularly open or clear when he asked, and only seemed to clarify things earlier this year (and retroactively).

Now, given the politicization of the Department of Justice and the sometimes tense relationship between Bowser and the Trump administration, there’s probably room for doubts about how serious any investigation would be.

Bowser has otherwise been asked pointed questions about special education services, the youth curfew and more programs and activities for kids, her relationship with the D.C. Council, and so on. She's been punchy and pointed in response, not shying away from standing her ground.

In response to a question from a party member on ICE and Homeland Security agencies working with MPD, Bowser says they are the "problematic" agencies and she is trying to get them off of the D.C./federal task force.
