"That is a crisis in terms of our ability as a nation to do the work we need to do to inform the policymakers, but also just to show that we take Antarctica seriously."

Antarctic research jeopardised by 'terminating' funding, scientists say
Australia's ability to conduct strategic, in-depth, and long-term research in Antarctica is being compromised by "terminating" funding models for key programs, scientists warn.

It was a privilege being a part of this study looking at the drivers of the unprecedented 2023 North Atlantic marine heat wave 🌊🌎🌡️

Will we get a similar one in the next few years?
Unfortunately it is likely because global warming causes a trend towards shallower mixed layers which heat up quickly.
Out today in Nature, our paper on the drivers of the record 2023 summer heating of the North Atlantic. Temperatures warmed to record levels in just a few months. The impacts on climate & ecosystems were severe. A thread on how this work came about and what we found.👇👇🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Are you at @egu.eu this week? Interested in Antarctic margin dynamics and the impact of natural climate variability on its processes?

Come join my presentation this Wednesday + again on Thursday in a PICO session where I am allowed to only use the 1'000 most common English words.

Six days left to submit your abstract for the next EGU conference (15th Jan. at 1 pm CET).

We'd love to see your abstract in one of our two sessions on Southern Ocean & Antarctic margin dynamics.
In next April/May, I will help convene a Southern Ocean session @eurogeosciences.bsky.social.

Come share your science in one of our two sessions!

"We're seeing areas of Antarctica starting to green, turning green with plant life as the ice retreats, and we're seeing 150 billion tonnes a year of ice go into the ocean, to drive up sea levels." - Prof Matt King, ACEAS Director

🚨 Paper alert: @mauricehuguenin.bsky.social last PhD chapter is published!

They isolated the footprint of ENSO on West Antarctica in an ocean model and found that El Niño increases cross-shelf flow of warm Circumpolar Deep Water. This has the potential to increase basal melting of ice shelves.
