Where are you seeing that she was advertising on social media? I did not see that in this article, or in the linked one in German.

The German article says she brought her tattoo equipment because the friend she was staying with wanted a tattoo. ICE likes to confuse human relationships with working.

I retract my comment. I though I was the old person on this site.

Does make me wonder what on earth they were giving those out for…

Because they are paying taxes. That’s what an ITIN is for, paying income tax when you can’t get a social security number because you’re not authorized to work.

Go check your old card. It said “Not valid for employment without DHS authorization” or possibly “without INS authorization” if you got it before 2003.

Of course non-citizens are allowed to work. Are you seriously saying you couldn’t lawfully work when you had a green card?

Here’s the application form to get a social security number - as you can see, non-citizens are eligible

So yeah, a few of them might be the dependent spouse of a visa holder who has to pay taxes on their gambling winnings, or their stock options or something else that isn’t a salary, but the vast majority will be people working without authorization, and they are deportable.

People who are authorized to work get social security numbers. ITINs are for people who aren’t eligible for social security numbers (because they don’t have an immigration status that lets them work), but who still owe taxes.

People who are willing to admit they made a mistake and who are willing to actually push back against the administration can be welcomed without ridicule.

This dude still wants to say that he couldn’t possibly have been expected to see this coming and only seems upset that he was impacted.

If federal judges - who actually determine sentences - are willing to impose the death penalty for a misdemeanor for which the maximum criminal sentence is six months, or even for a felony for which the maximum criminal sentence is two years, we are in bigger trouble than any of us realize.

You too. And if all the chatter about his past does result in an actual denaturalization case, I promise to laugh my ass off.
February 11, 2025 at 3:00 AM
Thanks dude. I’m trying to keep track what ICE is doing so I can protect my clients, not rant about my pet assumptions about immigration files I haven’t seen.

A stupid one, yes.
February 10, 2025 at 10:52 PM
If his plan is to scour federal returns for people filing with ITINs instead of social security numbers, the IRS is who would have that information. Don’t love the economic consequences of that idea though.

Did her lawful status expire?
February 10, 2025 at 10:43 PM
Because that’s not what is says. DOJ will seek the death penalty in cases of drug-related capital crimes and non-drug related capital crimes when committed by cartel members or by people in the U.S. unlawfully.

It makes unlawful entry an aggravating factor in a capital case. Still terrible.

I LOVED this book.

They all should have known better, but the immigration attorney REALLY should have fucking known better.

5. There are reporters doing amazing work on the human side of this issue, but we need to pay attention to the technical side to push back against the next Laken Riley Act, or the on-going ahistorical revisionism around the 14th amendment.

We need to pay attention to how laws and government work.

4. I don’t know what the mistake is here, but I know that a reporter who knew the eligibility requirements would have asked more questions and written a different story.

We need good reporting on immigration. We need it to keep ourselves informed and to push back against administration lies.

3. And if you knew how DACA worked, we wouldn’t get articles saying that a teacher who was just deported is 24 year old, came to the US at 13, and had work authorization through DACA.

2. DACA is a good example. It was a major change, there have been a ton of articles about sympathize young people whose lives have been changed, and yet there’s so little understanding of the basic program requirements, even though it’s been around for over a decade and is pretty straightforward.
