The judge dismissed the claim, but as the man was about to be hanged, the rooster stood up and crowed. Shocked, the judge rushed to stop the execution—just in time. The pilgrim was released and later returned to Barcelos to carve a cross in thanks, which still stands today.

As a final request, he asked to see the judge. Brought to the judge’s house during a banquet, he pointed to a roasted rooster on the table and proclaimed, “If I am innocent, that rooster will crow!”

According to legend, a Spanish pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela was wrongly accused of theft while passing through the town of Barcelos. Despite his innocence, he was sentenced to hang.
