In the Vietnam era we had the actual reason for that quagmire laid out in "The Pentagon Papers" (Tin, Rubber and Oil). In Iraq it was oil under the initial guise of "Saddam provided material support for 9/11 attacks (thata lasted for about a week), before the yellow cake and the WMD bullshit...
