Democrats cannot expand their coalition if they abandon the interests or racially diverse, urban voters or if they employ a single explanation (race, resentment, etc.) to explain away their poor performance in rural America.

We find a significant (but not complete) overlap between rural consciousness and racial resentment. This is consistent with what Mettler and Brown (as well as Cramer) have noted in their scholarship.
