It’s hard to wrap my head around this moment, standing outside the largest synagogue in Europe beside a memorial with the names of every one of the hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews who were killed in the Holocaust, thinking about the opening of a concentration camp ~75 miles from my hometown.

Yesterday may have been the worst news for the preservation of democracy under Trump yet. Also the S&P 500 hit a record high.

Wanting an analog for understanding, I looked up the performance of the German stock market from 1930–1945.

I can imagine Trump thinking other countries will pay these tariffs.
And I can imagine Trump thinking the US might eventually rebuild manufacturing capacity with these tariffs.
But I think it’s really just another grift.
