I’m pleased that OUP went for colour illustrations in my chapter: there’s a cover of “Magnet”, discussed by Orwell in “Boys’ Weeklies”, and two bawdy postcards discussed in “The Art of Donald McGill”.

This excellent book arrived this morning, edited by @drnjwaddell.bsky.social. Brilliant to see this in the flesh!

W.G. Sebald‘s writing table now sits in my study. It was a gift from my neighbour Gordon Turner, a longtime friend and UEA colleague of “Max”. Gordon remembers stripping the pine top with Ute, Sebald’s wife, in the 1970s. The rather battered legs are still painted in a chipped black gloss.

Unboxing my copies of The British Novel of Ideas, hot off the press from @cambridgeup.bsky.social. A beautifully produced book! My own chapter looks at comedy, sincerity, and hypocrisy in novels of ideas by Rose Macaulay, Doris Lessing, Jonathan Coe, and Jeanette Winterson.

The cover image is a print by Chris Orr called “The Battle of the Books”. As well as evoking Swift‘s classic tale, the print was inspired by the ways people displayed their bookshelves in zoom calls, during the pandemic. It suits our book perfectly!
