I get it, games are really big, really detailed, really expensive now, but it doesn’t always have to be something huge; games taking over ten years to make is insane, that used to be two console generations

Despite the fact that there have been iterative series in recent memory-Tomb Raider, Hitman
Forza was a yearly series for eight years, though that streak is definitely over

Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed, but those really feel like milking
October 17, 2025 at 6:44 PM
Now companies just do DLC, because apparently people want the next game to be a complete overhaul of the series
October 17, 2025 at 6:44 PM
Majora’s Mask repurposed tons of Ocarina of Time’s assets and made a completely different game

Vice City was first envisioned as just an expansion pack of Grand Theft Auto III
It’s considered a far superior game
October 17, 2025 at 6:44 PM
Up until the 360 era, most franchises had a trilogy model-3 or so games in a single generation, same console, same engine, yearly or biyearly, building on the existing groundwork

Were they referring to the Chozo Ruins? The frigate? The overworld? Just a single room?

They had nine months to do the rest of the game, 80-100 hours a week
October 17, 2025 at 6:42 PM
They had two years to make the game-neither the best or worst, but it was a big game

They spent six months on the first level-which is confusing, Metroid doesn’t have levels
October 17, 2025 at 6:42 PM
Were all four crews merged together to work on the game?

No, they faced tons of layoffs

The sources don’t specifically say 75% of the company was fired, but they don’t specifically deny it

The giant office was”half-empty”, people were scared for their jobs
October 17, 2025 at 6:41 PM
That seems fairly reasonable, basically how Rare worked

But, they had a lot of trouble with ideas, with management, and Nintendo only liked the “action-adventure” concept

So they suggested they develop Prime
October 17, 2025 at 6:41 PM
Metroid Prime is one of the most infamous examples

Retro’s founding was an ambitious mashup of developers from a ton of different companies, given 2-3 years to make four different GameCube games, potentially launch titles, divided into four 30-person teams
October 17, 2025 at 6:39 PM
Mega Man 2-four months, 20-hour days

Super Smash Bros Melee-13 months
October 17, 2025 at 6:39 PM
I mean, if they were working that long voluntarily, like this was a shared passion project…maybe not that healthy but it’s your business

But you can’t expect or force an entire crew to work that much
October 17, 2025 at 6:39 PM
The final build of Banjo-Kazooie was apparently done by fifteen people in fifteen months

I imagine a lot of assets were probably repurposed from Project Dream, but they were working 80-100 hours a week
October 17, 2025 at 6:38 PM
That doesn’t mean you should rush a game, definitely not crunch your employees, but you should also try to strive for a consistent timeframe, 3 to 5 years seems reasonable
October 17, 2025 at 6:38 PM
Game Development has always been all over the place

There are really good games that were made really quickly, and really bad games that took ages
October 17, 2025 at 6:36 PM
i mean that one’s a technicality
October 15, 2025 at 10:49 PM
-Geograph Seal and Jumping Flash technically count

-Metroid Prime was a Japan-US collaboration

-I just found Quest for Bush by al-Qaeda
October 15, 2025 at 2:53 PM
Elebits on the Wii, that’s a really cool one

Crime Crackers on PS1

Metal Head on the 32X counts

Sega also did Outtrigger, which is an FPS, TPS hybrid

Gun Buster from Taito

Star Cruiser, an early PC game
October 15, 2025 at 12:07 PM
Resident Evil 7-9
The rail shooters are counted too but that may be pushing it

Some PSP stuff
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Coded Arms

The Gungriffon games

Epidemic, Kileak and BRAHMA Force from Genki

Hudson Soft made Water Warfare on WiiWare

Onslaught is another WiiWare game

Ape Escape 2 and 3 are pretty strange

The light colour palette makes them feel oddly modern, but I think I prefer the more lush look of Ape Escape 1-as janky as that game is, I think it had excellent art direction

Slightly rough and dated but stylish graphics are better than technically cleaner but blander graphics

These old Nvidia demos for instance

That is literally upscaled PS2 graphics
September 13, 2025 at 7:55 PM
To be fair, I think a lot of later PS1 games (around 1999-2001) are really overlooked

Yeah, they were dated upon release, but they could be pretty impressive for the hardware

One I’ll single out is Die Hard Trilogy 2
