It’s probably what happens whenever a country transitions from a low-value manufacturing base to a high-value one. It’s basic fucking industrialisation.

How are these people treated as smart/visionary?

Welch, not Welsh — though, like a certain Welsh farmer, it would be funny to see an encounter between him and John Prescott.

Quite right.

I love this website.

It is not. The law regulating vehicles (ajoneuvolaki, 82/2021) sets mandatory requirements for vehicles accepted to use in public roads, and working speedometer is a mandatory requirement per law (13.2 §, part 11)

I fucking love the Internet.

I tell a fun story, I get an actual answer with actual legal citations and everything.

Thank you so much man. But no, I ain't going to snitch on my mate. ;)

At least, not for that. He deserves prison for introducing me to salmiakki, however...

And salmiakki vodka.

Also, China's semiconductor design abilities *are* very good and they're getting better -- in part because of the US sanctions against the industry.

They're building a lot of cool shit with RISC-V, especially on the server side. The bottleneck is lithography, but that won't last forever.

I got a deep-vein thrombosis just reading that.

Dare you to fly it.

Also, subscribed!

I barely use Twitter. Checked it yesterday and saw I had 20 notifications. All were telling me to check out posts by Radio Genoa, Tommy Robinson, and various other far-right cranks.

It's a cesspit.

China's tech industry acts like America's did before the 1980s, when Welch's rot started to set in.

There's a lesson here! One that people are too stupid to note.

Like, it would not pass an MOT in the UK. No way.

And I assumed Finland was super strict when it came to driving law!
November 7, 2025 at 11:53 AM
I have no idea how or if that’s even legal.

That said, I do have a soft spot for the humble Lada.

A mate of mine lives in Helsinki and he still drives the car his nan imported from the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

It doesn’t even have a working speedometer. He figures out how fast he’s going by looking at the gears, the RPMs, and guessing.

The idea that China is the Soviet Union, where the peak of high tech is the Lada is genuinely hilarious.

I went to Shenzhen in 2018, nearly a decade ago, and it was like being transported into the future.

Thank you for reminding me why Rabbie Burns is, and forever will be, Scotland's poet.

nothing more heartbreaking than the eventual 'Better Together: uHoo is joining the Salesforce family' email for these
November 6, 2025 at 4:35 PM
God, that brings me back.
November 6, 2025 at 4:35 PM
I was referring to the various types of taxes mentioned in the previous post!
November 6, 2025 at 4:34 PM
TBH, I like getting pitch emails like this, because it reminds me when tech products were tech products, and tech companies had silly names that didn't mean anything.
November 6, 2025 at 4:06 PM
Know that feeling.
November 6, 2025 at 1:50 AM
I think you’re just expecting too much. It really is that bad.

If you ever want to know how Theranos got as far as it did… well.

Now you know.
