It's to drive sales. Wigan had a three year policy on kit designs, I think this is loosely still the case but was definitely the case when Lenagan was at Wigan:

Year 1: Traditional
Year 2: Traditional
Year 3: Experimental

Although experimental kits divide opinion they tend to outsell traditional.
