I would completely agree. I also would suggest that students might be using services such as Chegg, but they’re not admitting it in surveys. Some correlation probably exists between how much an assignment asks a student to grapple with the subject and purchase of material.

Sounds like an opportunity for greater integration of open educational resources within courses.
