Professor of Earth Science at Cornell University: I study volcanoes, tectonics, glaciers and other planets. All views are my own. he/him
Had a wonderful visit to the Lizzadro Museum in Oak Brook. Former Cornell EAS postdoc Kyle Brill is the Director!

Wow, it seems like just yesterday Samantha was a Cornell undergrad in field geophysics class (photo is in the mudboils of Tully, NY). Big congratulations to Dr. Moruzzi!

This is from AGU last year -- number of volcanoes erupting on each day from the GVP. The point I was making is that it was stable the approximate last 10 years, but there was a big jump around 2000 thanks to improved detections of eruptions from MODIS and other satellite sensors.

5. Too many good talks to count, plus plenaries by Eleanora Rivalta and Sam Poppe.

Looking forward to day 2! Presenting my poster on preparing to constrain the global eruption flux on Venus with the VenSAR radar on EnVision this afternoon.

Hopefully I'll make it to the workshop before it is over! Fortunately the other person from Cornell is already there -- Andie Gomez-Patron and is ready to go

Thanks for sharing -- we have a dropstone from Gowganda in our rock park outside Snee Hall that I frequently show to classes and visitors!

Back to 2019 levels -- this is number of abstracts and I think 27,000 in 2024 (about 25,000 in person). Costs have risen faster than inflation for these types of meetings.

Congrats to postdoc Federico Galetto on his new paper quantify recent eruptions at Raung volcano, Indonesia (not to be confused with the also active Ruang volcano). link.springer.com/article/10.1...

This is in a special issue about remote sensing in volcanology: link.springer.com/collections/...

Sorry this was in alt text: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIq8.... A more recent result (2021) shows the trend in O&G continuing but increased in mining in this talk: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z7k...

According to AGI geoscience graduates have been moving into non-O&G sectors since 2016-2017(plot below for MS degrees). For what it is worth, our undergrad and grad enrollments are up, but no O&G recruiters for years.

Love the Ithaca Voice -- this headline should win an award. It still makes me laugh

Looks nice! I didn't realize there were so many options you could play with. Minimum number of words >1 is helpful

Deadline for applications for the CorGGLE paid summer internship is coming up on Feb. 15 -- please forward to anyone who might be interested!

Farewell #AGU23 -- Great to connect with so many and see great science.

At the Council meeting we heard registration $ is a concern for everyone. It is a battle to break even (Last year it lost money). Write me to discuss further.

What I could find is AGU abstract submissions (which is a few thousand more than attendees). Note 2023 isn't final but is 3rd highest.

Big day 4 Geodesy #AGU23!

Bowie Lecture at 14:10 by Freysteinn Sigmundsson: "Geodesy for improved understanding of the interaction of magmatic processes, plate movements, and effects of climate change on the solid Earth"

All are welcome to the Geodesy reception at 18:30 (you don't need a ticket)
