You notice after that that Ford runs towards the camera ala Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life, then sees the people all carrying the same basket, a shout out to Hitchcock and the cops looking for Cary Grant among the red caps in North by Northwest.
Well played, wouldn’t you say?

I’m really sorry to hear that for you. You’re such a joy and an inspiration here. Please get some good rest this weekend. And, if you want to move to Northern California, I’m sure we could find a spot for you!

In the mid 80s he was in a PBS production of Clifford Odets’s Rocket to the Moon, with Eli Wallach, John Malkovich, Ian McShane & Judy Davis. Every scene he’d walk into the dentist office he worked in w/ JM, walk to the water cooler, take a drink & say “Ahhh. Municipal champagne!” Terrific actor.

Three years ago or so I taught this right after teaching Jane Eyre. Many students wondered if Hurston naming her main character Janie was a shout out to Brontë. I’ve often thought about that since.
I love TEWWG so much. I really believe it’s the Great American Novel.
