Delivery person rang the bell to drop off a package earlier, and for a brief moment I was expecting to open the door to find two neatly dressed, smiling strangers asking me if I’ve heard the good news about content warnings and hashtags.

The power station has long been an iconic landmark on the south bank of the Thames, distinctive for its four prominent smokestacks (two for each of its two separate generating facilities) and industrial art deco architecture. Perhaps most famously, it featured in the cover art for Pink Floyd's […]

London's Battersea Power Station, built as two nearly-identical halves completed in 1935 and 1955, respectively, was originally a coal-fired electrical generating plant. It was decommissioned in 1983. After being idle for nearly 40 years, the plant has been re-developed as retail space and […]

This composition fully exploited the image circle and edge sharpness of the lens. We're to the right of the power station, but to preserve the […]

#photography nerdity:

For much of my architectural work especially, I often create high resolution "stitched" composites made of multiple captures of different parts of the subject.

Modern image software (like Capture One and Photoshop) make this fairly easy and seamless, but the technique and […]

Trump just pardoned Rudy Giuliani and a host of others who weren't actually convicted of or facing charges for any federal crimes. Probably just performative, but it does makes me wonder what crimes he knows they committed that haven't come to light yet.

Still getting yelled at for my grievous defamation of the Mastodon DM mechanism and my failure to put a warning on a post commenting on current events.

Going through another pass down my mentions to block shouty scolds from the last day, a process I’m finding strangely satisfying.

A sliver of good news: SCOTUS just denied cert in a case asking them to overturn Obergefell.

Anyway, I'm pretty done with the Mastodon Homeowner's Association from two towns over coming to my door and telling me what color I'm allowed to paint my house.

Unrelatedly, I just encountered this surprisingly deep and nerdy dive into the history of the NATO (IACO) phonetic (spelling) alphabet.

Interesting lessons for usability and internationalization here. Testing matters!

I don't generally CW my posts about law and politics, because these are subjects that come up naturally for me, a central part of my day job. I put CWs on the rare posts I make that I anticipate might reasonably cause harm or distress.

But I'm happy to help the people who insist that I post in […]

Yes. Actually, I think that's a pretty good minimum threshold for anyone posting something.

@jautero Nonetheless, the confusion has caused harm among users who lack your detailed understanding of its semantics, and in my opinion, it's useful to point this out. So I have, and will continue to do so.

RE: https://federate.social/@mattblaze/115521120060363130

Since my pointing this out seems to really bother certain people who'd prefer I not mention it, let me re-up this.
Semi-periodic reminder that the DM feature here is utterly broken and should not be regarded as "private" in any meaningful sense. And its semantics seem designed to violate the principle of least surprise.

Example: ANYONE mentioned in a message, not just tagged at the start, is a recipient. So […]

The ACA/Obamacare is by no means perfect, but it's been game changing for those with "preexisting conditions" who lacked good employer-subsidized care.

We will soon add the fact that we can't provide stable, affordable health care coverage to the list of self-inflicted national wounds.

I chose the 32mm Rodenstock with stitching here. I could have just barely squeezed this into a single frame with the wider-angle 23mm, except that the 23 doesn't have a large enough image circle to accommodate the vertical shift needed to keep the vertical lines from converging. The 32 has a […]
