I've had my doubts about RE's ability to turn things around for a while. I am now firmly of belief he can't.

A reset and a clean slate looks to be the only way out of this malaise, in my view.

The players need to hear a new voice and new ideas.

Defeat at Norwich seems a foregone conclusion at this point, sadly. And I don't see us beating Swansea at home which would make Stoke (H) a must-win for Edwards in my eyes.

I suspect we will win that one and it'll prolong this stasis. But how much longer can it go on?
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
We're in limbo. Moving forwards, then back, but ultimately getting nowhere.

Edwards is only ever a few matches away from crisis and the need to firefight in each game is only obscuring any longer term vision and deferring the development of a distinctive style of play.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
But where does that leave us going forward?

Can anyone honestly say they're seeing the seeds of a successful team being sown for next year?

Does it look like we're instilling any sort of philosophy and making meaningful progress toward it?

It feels as though the club's sole on-the-pitch ambition for this season (and that of some fans) is for us to achieve just enough so that we aren't forced to be another "sacking club".

A 16/17th place finish by any means would be enough for some it seems
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
We are a million miles away from that as things stand.

So, what next?

Away results will not decide Edwards' fate. As long as results at home keep us above a 1ppg average in the league, I suspect he'll be Luton Town manager.

Beyond that, I'm not sure where we're headed.

Recruitment obviously plays in to all of this, but that debate has been done to death.

Whatever your view on that, it's indisputable that in recent years we have always been a team that's greater than the sum of its parts. A cohesive unit with a clear identity.

Of our total xG this season, 31% is made up of chances from set pieces - the third most in the league - and our total OPxG stands at 13.39 (16th).

Those aren't the kinds of numbers you'd expect given the style of play Edwards was selling during pre-season.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
On the ball, things aren't any better - we continue to lack ideas and there are no recognisable patterns of play aside from long balls.

We're playing the game one pass at a time for the majority of matches. There is no tempo, no chemistry, no craft; often no clue.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
it's obviously a limiting factor for this side. And we're not just talking about the high press at home, we're talking about the basics like players knowing where to be and responding to the game around them within this back three system however we intend to engage the opposition.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
times, but there's enough evidence from the past year of Edwards' tenure to show the players just aren't getting it.

Whether it's that they aren't capable of deploying the out-of-possession tactics he is fixated on or that he's not communicating the ideas well enough...

screaming at his players as he tried to correct their positioning. This wasn't late in the game, after subs, when shape can be lost. It was the second minute, directly after an int'l break, and after a year of playing this way.

Of course, coaches micromanage their players at...
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
players have regularly been seen waving their arms and shrugging their shoulders at who should be doing what, and where. Not to mention leaving huge gaps just about anywhere on the pitch the opposition decides to create them.

As recently as Hull at home, Edwards could be seen..
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
It doesn't take a tactico to see they are struggling to execute what is being asked of them.

Edwards' post-match comments on players making mistakes in their pressing was revealing. In isolation, you'd overlook it. But this comes after a third of a season where Luton...

muddled thinking as a result of the pressure he's under.

The players of course bear some responsibility but, as I've said before, I think you can hold them accountable for poor performances when they are isolated events, not when it's been an unrelenting cycle of mediocrity.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
Edwards clearly had other ideas.

This follows a run of dubious away selections - the lack of rotation at Coventry; the lightweight and unbalanced midfield at Middlesbrough being examples.

It doesn't speak of a manager who possesses mental clarity; rather, it suggests...

Moses had a poor game but can you blame him?

When you ask a right-footed, 33-year-old winger to play at LWB and go 1-vs-2 all game, you're not going to have much of an outlet on the counter.

We had the personnel to deploy players in their favoured positions, but...

simplifying things for a group that are clearly bereft of confidence and likely losing faith with each defeat inflicted upon them.

In asking Reece Burke and Victor Moses to play as wing-backs, he both shackled this team going forward and made it vulnerable defensively.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
This latest break was supposed to be a watershed moment for the club - outlooks cleared, weight lifted, minds focussed - but Edwards still appears lost within his own ideas.

At Leeds, as at Sheffield United almost two months ago, he tried tactical gimmicks instead of...
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
So much for turning corners. Each of our three wins following international breaks has proved to be a false dawn.

When you look at the season as a whole, Watford is the only fixture we've both played well in and won.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
That's now three international breaks where we've been hoping to see the rebirth of our team.

Three opportunities for Edwards to re-evaluate, implement changes and set this team along a path of progress.

It's not happened and, truthfully, it looks like it never will.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
Losing to Leeds at Elland Road came as no surprise to anyone, but the lack of belief and the way in which we surrendered the game was disheartening.

After all, this performance was supposed to bear the fruits of an "inspiring coming together of minds" recently.
November 29, 2024 at 8:35 AM
That's now a fifth straight away defeat which makes it 9 losses in total this season - 1 more than we suffered during the entirety of the 22/23 season despite only being 1/3 of the way through this campaign.

Yikes.
