⚠️ LIFE STORY REPLY GUY
As a guy that hasn't watched a Bond film since Brosnan: This is the ideal time to canonize that idea, and use it as a way to make the franchise worth watching again.

When people lash out, they project their own insecurities. Every insult is a confession of what they don't like about themselves. They latch on to things you've never considered because those are the things they fixate on when they look in a mirror. You don't owe it to them to share their shame.

I'm not usually a "deep lore" guy, but I love that canonically in Trek, the moneyless society came _before_ the replicator - humanity couldn't achieve replicator technology until _after_ we gave up profiting off artificial scarcity.

Came in his pants from finally living out his gestapo fantasies.

Right? You can't have class unity with white nationalists, because they've proven they will vote against their own best interests just to hurt immigrants and minorities. Unity and tolerance are social contracts; by virtue of their own belief systems, fascists can't fulfill them.

In my early 20s I liked Ron Paul, but then I started tugging on the "but why are so many libertarians racists?" thread and ended up at that part of American history between the Dixiecrats and Nixon's Southern Strategy - you know, the part they call "woke" if you try to teach in public schools.

The original Star Wars trilogy was how a young me learned the classic three act structure, which makes this post feel especially appropriate.

A Jewish Hanukkah Menorah Defies the Nazi Swastika, 1931 - Rare Historical Photos
With the Menorah glowing brightly in her window, Rabbi’s wife snapped a photo of the Menorah and captured the Nazi building and flag in the background.

But personality disorders are a relatively recent concept in psychology. It's not that any of us "lifers" are alone, we're just not well-understood clinically yet, and we're frequently lumped together with people that don't experience depression the way we do.

Care providers are then often at a loss when questions like "when did you first notice these thoughts?" have answers like "when I was five years old" instead of "a few weeks ago after a tragic event." It's very isolating to feel like even professionals don't understand the disease you're describing.

As a result, treatment resources revolve around insultingly short time frames ("at least two weeks", "the last six months") and focus on unsustainable short-term solutions ("be gentle with yourself") and false hope ("it gets better") which just aren't applicable to lifelong chronic depression.
September 29, 2025 at 10:17 PM
Personally, I think "depression" is an overly-broad diagnosis. Lots of people deal with severe, but ultimately temporary, depression triggered by major life events. Other people experience a lifelong chronic anhedonia that has nothing to do with life events. These shouldn't both be "depression."

When I was a kid I used to watch Taxi reruns and thought he looked so old; I am now the same age he was. 👴🏻

Right now I've got an aging PC in an ATX case connected to the living room TV. It's doing double duty as a household Plex/Calibre server and occasional couch-co-op retro console emulator. I've been thinking about replacing it with something in a smaller form factor, and you may have just sold me.

Still though, I think there's value in the historical narrative that he came to the public's attention by encouraging individuals to consume terrible things on Fear Factor and then graduated to encouraging the whole nation to swallow an enormous load of unmitigated bullshit.

I remember not so long ago, (lay)people looked at "an idea for an app" as something valuable, as if the formula for success is just "good idea + code." They'd hear you're a dev and start teasing their "idea" like it was just money waiting to happen. Alas, "an idea" is not "a business plan."

Ironically, a politician wasting $218M in tax revenue on an illegal vanity project is the one crime that might warrant a stint in a swamp prison.
