MiGlike Mirage
November 13, 2025 at 11:37 PM
I have this idea of making a Mirage but MiG-29, but for me that's a job better left for pencil and paper, the 3D modeling coming after I've figured out what the actual design is.

This one is just... plane

Ok, I think I'm gonna stop rambling now, this all started when, while making this sticker, I realized people who don't know the planesonas might confuse Harrier with Spitfire given they have the exact same camo pattern.

Then again, one is classy and the other has charisma.

I actually don't recall if I've added actual fins to a planesona before. Jaguar has them incorporated with their thigh-mounted flare pods.

As for why he has a knife, that's how it feels like to run in at mach with some Magic 2s. Similar playstyle to the Mirage F1, just less nimble.

Ifrit does have the chasseur cut on her shorts, she is great at air superiority. Revoker doesn't have the cut, and I'm questioning why I'm talking so much about a tiny little triangular gap in some shorts.

Sifting through old art for things to talk about, here's a Jaguar IS.

Reminds me, I still haven't made a design for the FS-20 Vortex. I haven't played it much yet, I should maybe get around to that.
Also Chicane, haven't really made a design for it yet, they're mostly obscured in the one sketch they appeared in.

Man I have been rambling a lot...

And yes, my thought process does hyperfocus, dead-end, then loop back on itself many times. I'm undiagnosed.

Speaking of looping back, a few things:
I DID put horns on a planesona, the Ifrit, purely because of her namesake.
ALso her bra and chestplate are very angular, given her design.

Then again, some of them wear bits of clothing just for the hell of it. M4K has his parade dress, Harrier and Medusa both wear jackets (one more than the other), Scimitar & Canberra wear goggles. And of course you have all the hats and headgear.
November 12, 2025 at 9:57 PM
Back to clothing, and how they kinda double up the camo.
I don't always draw them with more than shorts, even when they're dueling, and the coats aren't necessary, it just feels a bit off to me if they're uncovered on 'active operations' (e.g. WarThunder random battles, Nuclear Option matches, etc.)
November 12, 2025 at 9:50 PM
M4K's non-moving canards are very much not on the nose, and given they are beside the intake, the only place I could really think of putting them was the shoulder.

However, this means that they do tend to get covered by clothing, which is a slight downside.
November 12, 2025 at 9:43 PM
EF2K's canards are very much on the nose, Rafale's canards aren't really on the nose but they don't really feel like they're on the shoulders, as the intake below them feel more like the shoulders, so I put them on the cheeks, which feels appropriate if you've ever seen a Rafale from the front.
November 12, 2025 at 9:41 PM
For canards, compare EF2K/Rafale/M4K.
I do realize now that Rafale and M4K's canards are both in-line with the intake, but Rafale's are above the intake, while M4K's are right on the intake.
At the same time these aren't really hard rules or strict guidelines, most of the time I go by feel.
November 12, 2025 at 9:39 PM
I could probably incorporate some form of horns if a design requires, but none come up at the moment. Those WW2 night fighter radars are better represented with whiskers, given that they are up front at the nose. Canards are already represented by whiskers if they're in front of the 'shoulder'.

I suppose given that their livery often makes up a decent chunk of their identity, covering it up completely defeats the point. While it would be basically like wearing clothing with the exact same colour as your skin, I do also realize it's kindof the equivalent of giving a deer some camo dress.
November 12, 2025 at 9:25 PM
Moving on to other pieces of clothing, bras often just follow the colouring and pattern of the shorts. As for planesonas going for sorties, I tend to draw them with battle dress, often of the same camo pattern as their livery. I don't really have much of a reason for this.
November 12, 2025 at 9:20 PM
I'll probably give her a proper updated design now, given that she's taken an entirely new role as lead aggressor. That, and I need to differentiate it from J/S-9's flat-blue yellow-trim shorts.

Though I guess J/S-9 doesn't have that 'chasseur cut', named after how MIII & M2K have it.
November 12, 2025 at 9:17 PM
I haven't posted that first image here in full, it's pretty crap, but that was the first appearance of Mirage F1. Being brand new, I had absolutely no idea what symbol to give him (now her), so I just left it blank. The colours were inspired by the flat-blue livery of some MF1s.
November 12, 2025 at 9:15 PM
There are times where I just don't know what to put on there - P-63, Spitfire XIVc, and J/S-9 have fairly basic shorts, though J/S-9 has the best of those three imo, the colours just work.

Mirage III and 2K's shorts share the same design just with different symbols. MF1C's has different colour.
November 12, 2025 at 9:10 PM
J2M2's feature lightning bolts, that's his nickname. Bf-109E-7 (JP) has the Akeno flight school emblem, I figured it'd be neat since he occasionally flies out on aggressor duty, and he's very different from the other Japanese planes. Harrier's shorts feature a harrier bird, simple as that.
November 12, 2025 at 9:06 PM
But what the shorts also do is act as an additional piece of identification, not only of the origin/operating country, but they can also reflect the personality of the planesona. Best result is when I know the plane enough that I can incorporate references or features into the design.
November 12, 2025 at 9:04 PM
When I started drawing them, they didn't have any clothing at all, but it looked kinda weird, and as someone who wears full-body clothing even in summer, I prefer to have them covered.

Aside from straight up underwear, shorts give cover while still showing most of the livery on their fur.
