It is imperative Australia shows commitment to urgently needed action on autonomous weapons this #UNGA80
As states discuss #AutonomousWeapons at #UNGA80 amid growing global instability and the widening gap between #AI development and regulation, they must remember that this issue is too important for inaction.

Motivated by a recent TedTalk by a "defence product" company CEO, who pitches the company & its AI weapons as really being "about fostering peace", I've written a short blog post about why it is dangerous, if not naive, that these marketing narratives increasingly seem to inform gov't policy.
“#AutonomousWeapons can neither promote peace nor safeguard democracy, regardless of the marketing slogans. What they can do is enact large scale accelerated systematic violence.”

While numerous challenges remain, #landmine use has dramatically dropped over the past 25 years thanks to the Mine Ban Treaty. With their intention to leave the treaty, #Estonia, #Latvia, #Lithuania, #Poland, and #Finland are undermining 25 years of humanitarian progress.

Some analysis of the #autonomousweapons consultations from this week at the #UN in New York. This message ⏬⏬ is one we hope the new Australian parliament engages with, and the government will act upon, by supporting new international law negotiated in an inclusive forum to protect humanity.
“this issue concerns the future of multilateralism, of international law, and of our shared humanity…autonomy in weapons will not be confined to the battlefield - it will affect law enforcement, border control & other domains of public life” #KillerRobots
