I don't yet have a way of setting the arguments of many source files all at once - which would be needed for one binary to have a flag apply to all sources and another binary to hav[...]

I've got to say, all this is boggling my brain a bit, though I am rather tired. I'm not very fluent in Makefile unfortunately. I'll have a proper look probably tomorrow though I may forget.

I had already learnt the non-typed lambda calculus a couple years ago out if my own curiosity and I've been doing more stuff with abstract algebra these days so it wasn't that bad and really cool.
E.g. Monads made sense to me after reading their Wikipedia article, and the syntax was intuit[...]

Yeah you can get pretty far in languages just by guessing if a word is good or bad.
