Unenviable task for @isanet.bsky.social: In 2026, host a conference (that normally attracts >50% scholars from abroad) not just in the U.S. but in a Republican-led state. After Covid, the next big test for the "in-person-and-inside-a-Hilton" model.

Interesting check on how things are going: Read @economist.com issues from a few months ago and see what they considered the worst case scenario. It's worth noting that the "But maybe it'll be OK..." paragraphs are gone by now.

Here's the flat version via @ourworldindata.org. I guess it also depends on how the index is constructed. With Polity IV, IIRC, the scaling has cut-offs for democracy vs autocracy, akin to tipping points in your temperature analogy. Not sure abt EUI and V-Dem. Maybe one of the next newsletters? :)

Auch das nachfolgende Bild mit Aufschlüsselung nach Fachbereichen zeigt sehr eindrücklich, dass Unis und außeruniversitäre Forschungsinstitute in der Befristungsquote einmalig sind.
Balkendiagramm: Anteil unbefristeter Stellen an Unis und Forschungsinstituten bei ca. 5-10% je nach Fachrichtung (Geisteswiss., Rechts/Sozial, MatNat, Medizin, Ingenieur). In der Privatwirtschaft viel höher. (Sonstiger öffentlicher Sektor fehlt hier.)

Für andere, die von der Grafik auf den ersten Blick ebenso verwirrt waren wie ich: Die Labels mit dem Strich beziehen sich auf Wechsel in der Anstellung. Die 1. Gruppe ist zu lesen als "Doktorand(in) öffentl. Forschung -> Post Doc öffentl. Forschung". Usw.
Auszug aus den Report: Befristungsstatus und sektorale Wechsel Um die Relevanz des Befristungsstatus für den weiteren Arbeitsmarktverlauf zu verstehen, sind in Abbildung B77 und Abbildung B78 die Anteile neu begonnener unbefristeter Beschäftigungsverhältnisse von Promovierten bei verschiedenen sektoralen Wechseln beziehungsweise Verbleiben dargestellt. Bei Arbeitgeberwechseln innerhalb des akademischen Sektors sind neu begonnene unbefristete Beschäftigungsverhältnisse die Ausnahme (7,3%). Aber auch ein Wechsel vom akademischen Sektor in andere Bereiche des öffentlichen Diensts geht oft mit einer weiteren Befristung einher. Bei diesem Wechseltyp sind nur 32% der neu begonnenen Beschäftigungsverhältnisse unbefristet. Dagegen bedeutet ein Beschäftigungswechsel in den privaten Sektor (egal ob aus dem privaten Sektor, von Hochschulen/AUFE oder aus der Arbeitslosigkeit), dass die neue Position größtenteils unbefristet ist: Der Anteil von unbefristeten Arbeitsverhältnissen bei solchen Wechseln von Promovierten liegt stets über 70% (s. Abb. B77).

Die scheinbare Mehrbelastung für den €40.000-Haushalt ist wohl eher eine Modellannahme als bewusste Politik, siehe www.zew.de/presse/press.... Aber auch "+/- null" ist ja ein Statement...
Zitat aus der Pressemitteilung: "Würden die Wahlprogramme von FDP oder AfD umgesetzt, hätte diese Familie weniger Geld zur Verfügung: Beim AfD-Programm wären es jährlich 440 Euro weniger, beim FDP-Programm 1.520 Euro weniger. Bei der FDP liegt das an Reformplänen beim Bürgergeld. Bei der AfD ergibt sich das aus einer komplizierten Interaktion aus Steuererleichterungen und den Anrechnungsregeln beim Wohngeld.
