This also is going to stifle growth at UNL. Why would a department at UNL take any risks to, say, add a high-in-demand major and attract additional students when unfortunate timing could lead to the department's removal.

Would Stats be saved if the major never existed? Metrics seem unclear to me.

Today marks a dark day for Statistics and a blight on the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

I splurged and finally got the guitar I've been thinking about for about 20 years. Man, it's a game changer.

Today, I am thankful for YouTube for recommending a music video by the band Cardiac. Time for a deeper dive.

If absolute studs like Chris Bilder, Erin Blankenship, Bertrand Clarke, Susan VanderPlas, and others are unable to secure some level of job security at their institution, I'm not sure who in Statistics can.

It absolutely blows my mind that UNL would consider completely dissolving their Department of Statistics.
UNL puts six academic programs on the chopping block amid $27 million budget shortfall
Six academic programs are proposed for elimination, and four departments would be realigned into two new school.

Thinking about increasing my social media footprint starting on the drive to the Joint Statistical Meetings. Maybe record a couple short videos or something.

Anyone have any nagging stat questions? Post them here and I'll try to answer them. Bonus points for stat novices; there are no dumb q's.

Wendy's has really stepped up its breakfast game.

With Justin Fields out, the New York Jets should trade for Shadeur Sanders. The only franchise more cursed than the Jets is the Cleveland Browns, and the only thing more cursed than losing your starting quarterback in the pre-season is trading away a future star quarterback for little in return.

Just discovered the band That Dog. I wish I had discovered them earlier. Great songwriting, and tremendously catchy songs with jaw-dropping, precise, and inspiring vocal harmonies.

Minneapolis is the song I thought I could write one day. But I'm not sure I can. And they did. Mind blown.

Recently played gaming gems that need more attention:

Captain of Industry: Similar to Factorio: Create efficient supply chains to help a stranded colony thrive in their new surroundings. It is very well-optimized and places a strong emphasis on extracting maximal value out of available resources.

Recently played gaming gems that need more attention:

Planet Crafter: The quickest, most unflattering way to describe this game is Subnautica, but in space. But there's true magic in how this game rewards exploration with extremely memorable moments of discovery.

Recently played gaming gems that need more attention:

Railgrade: A simple enough premise; Construct complex supply chains using trains to deliver requested products to cities before time runs out. But the S-tier requirements require fairly optimized routes, which are fun and challenging to build.

Henry Rollins' album Weight is hitting differently. There is a poignant honesty and raw succinctness in it that feels perpetually relevant and mostly absent in music today. And it's exactly what I need right now.

Is there even one unnecessary word on the entire album?

So... I've been incredibly depressed the past... about 12 months? And when I am depressed, I don't really do much. It's like someone flipped my power switch to off. I think I'm powered back on, but it takes time to reboot. As I start booting up, I'm probably going have a flood of posts.

When I listen to Identity Theft by The Chats, I feel the same chill as I did in high school when listening to a new album on my Panasonic portable CD player at night while lying in bed. Dems some feels, man. #TheChats

Academia consistently pushes the need to pursue extramural funding. So I push and I push, fight through rejection after rejection, finally obtain funding for one of my research ideas...

And then less than a year later, my funding is held due to an executive order.

Academia is discouraging.

Welp, didn't have Elon Musk giving a Sieg Heil gesture at the Presidential Inauguration on my bingo card for 2025.

The Cars debut album is the Pet Sounds of power pop. Just banger after banger, hook after hook.

Has any band ever had a greater trajectory change than Sugar Ray after "Fly"? Starting with that one single song, their fate transformed from a punk, heavy metal, rock group with a niche following one of the most influential bands of the late 90s.

Just came back from a trip to California. I like long drives; they give me a lot of time to investigate a lot of nagging thoughts. I'm probably going to post random thoughts here for the next few days.
