Meet the new plan, better than the old plan

Oops, too much of this green color close together. That’s me working through a nice skein of Malabrigo Rios. Going to pull one or two out and save for later on the piece :)

Next part of the layout for the www.grannysquarecrochet.com project. Trying to keep things balanced with local strategies: put similar colors a knight’s move apart rather than same row/column, keep similar patterns away from each other, try to bring down bright colors using neighboring colors

Ok I think this is going to work! It feels good to have it starting to come together

After trying a lot of local rules for symmetry and other things, in the end I think the best strategy is to make sure things that are close together don’t have colors or patterns that are (1) too similar or (2) too different (?). Thoughts on arrangements? www.grannylifecrochet.com

Thinking about this type of join for the www.grannylifecrochet.com project, what do people think? This is just an extra round of 2hdc clusters with join-as-you-go. #grannylife #crochet 🧶

Yes! This is "Rule 6" of a modified 2D totalistic cellular automata spaced and rotated for granny square stitches. You can play with other cellular automata rules to make motifs using our app at mathgrrl.com/granny-life

Wrote some code to check when Rule 6 starts repeating; luckily it takes a while, to Generation 1407 -- which then resets all the way back to Generation 1 in the next step! #grannylifecrochet

…and when the square is done it should be just shy of 6” across. Done!

Crocheting while on the train from NYC to Virginia, so now there are more rounds…

After 8 rounds the square should be a bit under 4”. The pattern and tutorial videos on the website have tips about how to keep everything really square as you go.
