3. In 1770, Polynesian navigator Tupaia ensured that James Cook didn't die a meandering death by starvation in the Pacific Ocean. Tupaia is the reason the Endeavour made it to Botany Bay in one piece so as possessory claims could be made on behalf of the Mad King George III.
