Amy Pond has writer’s block.

I’d assumed - wrongly, it turns out - that being sent back in time to before there were smartphones and social media would mean no distractions. Nothing but a heavy, steel typewriter and the blank page. The very blank page. The blankiest blank page.

I thought about writing a story about writer’s block, but decided that was a cliché.

Rory has good stories, when he remembers them. On rainy days a sad, faraway gleam takes over his face and I know a story’s coming. A cold churn of causality touches his shores and leaves a pearl. It might be an adventure of derring-do as The Lone Centurion buckles his swash across the millennia or a sad story where Rory saw the worst of history and humanity. Often, both.

Either way, it’d be gone by morning. The memory sucked back under the waves and Rory wouldn’t even remember that he’d remembered anything. It’s my job - no, it’s my privilege - to immortalise in ink this lost reality and my husband’s place in it. Stories from an aborted timeline where the universe ended in 102 AD and then chugged along until the mid-nineties for some reason. Of all the decades for an apocalypse! Most people would welcome it, just to avoid the Macarena.

But I can’t ask Rory for a story today. He’s not here.

It didn't take us long to realise when we arrived. April 1938, seventeen months before war was declared. Of course he was going to enlist. It was as plain as the big nose on his stupid face. There was no way Rory Williams would sit back and let thousands die when he could be out there helping the wounded.

No matter how much I begged.

It doesn’t help knowing how the war will end or that Rory will live to 82. The Doctor once told me you can’t rewrite history once you’ve read it … and we all read Rory’s tombstone. But the Doctor lies. And what kind of life will we have? He could get hurt. I could get hurt. Was my name on that tombstone next to his? How long do I have? Do I even make it through the war? I’m from the future, I can tell you the exact day the war ends, and yet I feel like I have no idea what’s going to happen.

I’m just whinging. Everyone’s worried. I’m sure he’ll be okay. After all, me and Rory. We’ve met vampires, Silurians, flying eyeballs, the Silence (I think…), Weeping Angels, living goo, dinosaurs and Henry VIII.

And we came through unscathed.
