Cancer patients losing their homes and declaring bankruptcy. Diabetics taking half doses of medicine so they’ll last longer. Beyond my comprehension.

And for all that, we have more socialist elements, notably health care. There’s no doubt the American rich get better healthcare than we do, although not by much. But the middle class and the poor in the US are royally screwed.

I’d argue that Canada’s democracy is more robust than America’s. We don’t let politicians gerrymander districts. We don’t allow unlimited money to buy elections. We encourage voting by all, rather than making it hard for some population groups to vote.

There are two distinctions: socialism vs capitalism and democracy vs fascism or communism. Socialism is not opposed to democracy. If citizens voted for universal health care (or public schools, or transit,) that would be democracy and socialism. And that’s what most free-world countries have.
