A 100-cell organism needs about 7 rounds of cell division. A 1,000-cell organism needs about 10. A million-cell organism needs about 20. Development time scales with the logarithm of size.

I doubt this point. Protein design requires much less work today than it did 10 years ago yet the field continues to grow. Possible that automation of the tedious and expensive bits of science will lower the barrier to participate, making scientists much less rare and expensive.

Dumb hill to for him die on. I wonder is it desirable to automate all of science? What areas are valuable as a human endeavor, similar to art?

As a recent grad I've seen most of my ≤300-level CS courses adopt a CBTF model + frequent in-person assessments. Though this approach pre-dates LLMs:
