That is not a wood I have tried. Don't think there is any in Arizona lol. How did you like it?

Your time has value, you should consider that Art and not just a fancy bowl. A pole lathe, wow, I use my lathe to excess, yet can't imagine being the power plant as well. Your skill has the most value here (IMHO)

Usually Basswood or Poplar, Cherry, Pine and Walnut. I have a piece of Sassafras I want to try out and I am sure there are others out there I want to try lol. I have carved a few things from Paduk but am really not happy with how it can splinter. Oak works too but it is hard on the knives.

I do, While I have a pocket knife that goes with me, almost all my carvings are done with dedicated carving knives. I use Beavercraft knives mostly as I like supporting Ukraine, I have a couple I made and a couple Flexcraft. you only need a couple to get carving. A rougher and a detail will do.

Warning-Spoon carving is addicting. Very addicting. I end up spending lots of money on things for my addiction. I just came back from a local mill with $100 worth of end cuts of alder, poplar and basswood with a bunch of cherry included. Be Vwerry careful lol.
