Playing Final Fantasy XIII for the first time since it came out. Such a fascinating game, like a collision between a Richard Kelly movie and a Daniel Ignacio painting. Wrote a bit more in the alt-text about the crazy locations featured in just the first few hours! #gamesky
The game starts on a highway overpass in a region called the Hanging Edge. A confrontation breaks out between the military and a civilian group with these massive skyscrapers in the distance It's Vanille, our narrator and a very fascinating, multitudinous character. She has a resolutely positive demeanor which we know covers quite a bit of fear. She's eager to embrace a very nurturing role with Hope, but also has a subtle harder edge to her personality. She puts herself in harms way for him, but is quick to suggest retreat. She reminds me of my wife in some ways. You get the sense it's no coincidence the characters have all found themselves in this strange place, called a "Pulse vestige" and apparently containing some kind of god. The characters feel fated, players in some strange and grand design. The game immediately ups the ante on the Hanging Edge by taking you to a place which is impossibly advanced, very Arthur C. Clarke, but also strangely Gothic. Like a high-tech haunted house.

Deep within the temple/refinery the final Bryyonian Lord of Science hid a portal to his ancestral home, on a distant part of the planet inhospitable to its reptilian inhabitants. Here you find this forgotten monument to his ancestors' accomplishment. Game is filled with stuff like this! #gamesky
Two huge statues commemorating first contact between Bryyo and Chozo, before they turned toward isolationist fear and decline. You also find an esteemed gift from the Chozo left here aka the Screw Attack.

I think about the second planet you visit in #MetroidPrime3, Bryyo, quite often. A fully developed society with a respected place in the galaxy, which willfully turned its back on science and embraced an anti-intellectualism which became barbarism which became near extinction. #gamesky
Samus explores the desperate haunts of the last Bryyonian Lord of Science, the scion of a once prominent family who made first contact with the Chozo. One of the places the final unnamed Lord of Science utilized was an ancient temple, which he converted into a fuel refinery for various projects. First for waging war and defending himself against the primal lords who wished him harm, and finally to save the planet from the precipice of ecological disaster caused by the aforementioned war. These massive busts, really this whole complex, represent important Bryonnian history, forgotten by choice as they marched into intellectual oblivion. A golem built for war, both powered and constrained by fuel lines. Bryyo is filled with metaphorical imagery like this, capturing the essence of their apocalyptic war. As is typical for a Metroid Prime game, this testament of the final Lord of Science was placed in his former homes by his assistant, who escaped when he was killed and returned later. We don't know what happened to her, she was likely eventually found and killed as well.

This is such a cool enemy. These small insects have a symbiotic relationship with another creature, they latch onto things and inflate, bringing the prey up to a predator higher up the room. Samus can use these to reach hard to reach areas, but they're only in a few areas in the game. These games are so overflowing with brilliant ideas things you could build a whole game around are tossed out and then moved on from In this game Samus finds her DNA is corrupted by Phazon, the sentient mutagenic substance which destroyed the planets Tallon IV and Aether in the first two games and birthed Metroid Prime itself. Samus can check up on her increasingly ill status in her ship.

Olimar is one of the more philosophical gaming protagonists. He has found himself in harm's way many times and through his journaling you learn a lot about his life and worldview. I suppose a certain level of introspection and gratitude comes with the inherent danger of deep space travel. One of the treasures is a crystal skull. More fun with the Roadside Picnic concept. An alien finding an artifact crafted by humans to fraudulently demonstrate the existence of aliens.

Rediscovered my 3DS, which I really haven't played much of. Decided to start with Hey, Pikmin. This game got mixed reviews, but I really, really like it! As good as the main series for the most part. #Pikmin #gamesky
Just love the aesthetic of this series I believe this is a first for the series. That electric butterfly on the top screen is an enemy which is harmless to the pikmin, but can and will absolutely try to harm Oliver. Fun reversal as it's usually the pikmin who are in danger! Do not anger it It's really fascinating to me how an example Pikmin is of the Strugatsky Brothers' Roadside Picnic idea. What makes it even more interesting is how the discoverer is an alien from space and we created the "zones" he explores!
