Isn't this basically the conversation about 8-bit style pixel graphics all over again.

I'm guessing not very many Portuguese Phantasy Star cartridges were produced since it's a four megabit game with save RAM and a battery. Especially given how quickly TecToy started ditching the cartridge port on their Master Systems

Didn't Phantasy Star officially get a serviceable Portuguese translation. It's not great I've heard, but Brazilians are at least able to play the game

If the game list doesn't include Phantasy Star (according to what I could find online) then what even is the point of these plug-and-play Master Systems.

It's a combination of Mode 2 (column scrolling) and Mode 5 (highres), sacrificing a background layer in the process. Modes 2 and 5 were both rarely used in their own right, so it makes sense that developers couldn't come up with any uses for the mode that combines 2 niche features

Don't you think it's curious how the entire fourth reich rushed to that guy's defense after he was cancelled. Makes you wonder what kind of audience he was cultivating

Despite St1ka's good intentions, there's just no winning them over. At least St1ka deleted his Twitter account over this. Like if you don't want to be harassed by nazis online, don't fucking use the self-proclaimed Mechahitler website. It's so obvious

Nvm, where you went wrong was trying to appease Twitter nazis by uncancelling the weird racist chud. They're still sending you death threats anyway, and that's why you never try to appease fascists no matter what

You literally didn't do anything wrong

Did your launch-era Xbox 360 get the RRoD yet.

I guess the claim that the SNES focused on unit cost checks out because I've heard the Wii U was the only Nintendo console that was sold at a loss (at launch). Which is pretty funny in my opinion

I've always found it interesting how the Mega Drive and SNES have a surprising amount of tradeoffs with each other (hardware-wise) for there being a 2-year gap between their releases. Almost makes the SNES feel a little behind the times (hardware-wise) for when it released
May 4, 2025 at 4:21 AM
If we're getting technical, the SNES has 15-bit color (32,768 shades), and the Mega Drive/Genesis can output more than 512 colors thanks to its shadow and highlight modes. Either way, the MD is more powerful than the SNES, considering the Star Fox demo for the stock MD youtu.be/4J9aWTpPZRk

Interestingly, multiplatform games on both the Dreamcast and PS2 are pretty much always better on the Dreamcast. The differences are usually slight though, and this also has more to do with the PS2 being hard to develop for in its early lifespan than anything else

Once the DS came out though, both of those handhelds did in fact become shovelware dumping grounds, unfortunately

To be fair, westerners took the GBA pretty seriously early in its life with games like Duke Nukem Advance, Doom 1 & 2, polygonal 3D racing games like V-Rally 3, Drome Racers and the NFS games, and high-effort demakes like Tomb Raider and Tony Hawk

PC, unless you absolutely must play it portably (although I've heard it also runs great on the Steam Deck). Neither version has more content out of the box, but there are some pretty interesting mods for the PC version

Do you know if these prices are in USD or Canadian dollars. Still ultra expensive by today's standards either way, but some of these old catalog pictures floating around the internet are actually showing the Canadian prices
April 3, 2025 at 6:55 PM
People are bringing up that its price in Japan is going to be the equivalent of about $334, in order to accuse Nintendo of simply being greedy for pricing it over $100 higher overseas... they're so close to realizing...

I think this really comes down to my definition of shovelware being looser than others. To my mind, low-budget licensed games that languish in bargain bins, that nobody in their right mind would ever play if they have agency over what games they own, might as well be shovelware
February 21, 2025 at 5:27 PM
Bad licensed games and shovelware overlap so much that I don't find it meaningful to distinguish those two categories
February 21, 2025 at 4:35 PM
The Gamecube wasn't really a smashing success yet literally half of its library is licensed games (I counted, there are over 300 of them). Of course, some of those games are actually good, but the shovelware to actual game ratio on the Gamecube is quite high despite its relatively low sales
