We know most of Sappho’s words, and that knowledge steadies our guesses when we must guess. At the furthest extreme, when there is no tradition at all, we may learn humility from the luckless scholar who saw reason to approach the Linear B script by way of Basque, and eventually derived elegiac poems from what are now taken to be storehouse inventories. His book was published, in 1931, by the Oxford University Press.
