Damning example of 🇨🇦 disillusionment with Mark Carney - and how many feel he misrepresented his agenda.

@lindamcquaig.bsky.social says “Although Carney sold himself to Canadians last spring as a climate leader, his focus since becoming prime minister has been on pleasing business and investors.”

Today, I learned that my history of pain theories paper has hit 1000 citations. This was a genuine labour of love - and I'm so delighted (and grateful) to see that so many people read it, and then cited it!

I know 1000 isn't a lot for many on here, but I am very proud of this achievement.

@torwager.bsky.social presents data on 2 brain-based biomarkers of pain - one that tracks pain sensitivity (nocicpetion) and the other that captures evaluative/decision-making aspects of the pain experience at @canadianpain.bsky.social ASM 2025
May 4, 2025 at 1:15 PM
@torwager shows that the same factors that predict multi-condition pain are associated internalizing and externalizing disorders. The underlying genes are most expressed in the brain.

He cites Canadian work by @evp82.bsky.social’s lab showing that pain symptoms/measures/effects are not localized - but are widespread in scope and location

@peterstilwell.bsky.social argues that qualitative methods are needed to really understand how pain and suffering affects the person. He uses phenomenological approaches to explore the question.

Dr Anna Hood talks about DEI and pain research at @canadianpain.bsky.social ASM 2025

DEI basically capture true variability in society, and not being inclusive in recruitment for research samples suffers from not having applicability - and is effectively incomplete.

Just in time for the @canadianpain.bsky.social ASM 2025, we published a paper showing how little federal health research funding goes to pain.

Pain affects 1 in 5 (!) Canadians, and poses the *largest* health-related burden on the economy. But research funding pales in comparison.
