This was a super interesting read, thank you so much for posting it!

As a type designer I’m acutely aware of Monotype pulling this kind of trick, but never had such a detailed look at how it works

Thanks for the kind words, and wow, what a coincidence! (It’s a great street, of course)

It wasn’t so bad! The grid is super awkward (it’s like a 7:10 aspect with strict adjacency rules), which gives it that sudoku-like flow-state level of challenge. Better than kerning, anyway

I’m not complaining, it’s been a neat challenge so far. (case study on a specific set hopefully coming soon)

Specifically for Thermochrome. I very rarely get icon requests for other designs (presumably because they’re easier to pair with existing icon sets); at one point I had 3 requests regarding Thermochrome in the same week

These icons have been a surprisingly common request, and, less surprisingly, a tricky challenge.

The workflow I came up with involves sketching using rectangular pixels in @aseprite.org, and some custom tooling in @glyphsapp.com to snap everything to the typeface’s grid.

Arny Sans looks like a fantastically refreshing take on the Jugendstil concept, would love to see more of that!

Regardless of how good the platform is for sharing my work, I love that the design conversations here aren’t dominated by fawning dipshits talking about how much they love AI

Designed by Ihar Yukhnevich and Masha Maroz.

(I’m hugely grateful to Ihar for sending me a copy — getting to see how people use my fonts is pure joy, and this was clearly made with so much care and effort)
