Why does house finch song exhibit language-like efficiency and structure? Female house finches prefer more complex songs, and I think that increased efficiency and structure allows songs to be more complex without being prohibitively hard to learn and produce (📸 April Lahti).

These statistical patterns hold up across multiple levels of granularity in syllable clustering! This points to a limited form of scale invariance, or fractal equivalency, in house finch song.

Three major linguistic laws---Zipf's rank-frequency law, Zipf's law of abbreviation, and Menzerath's law---are all present in house finch. The song sequences also exhibit properties that are consistent with systematic, hierarchical structure.
