It's weird when I'm listening to podcasts about food and gardening while I do morning chores (this morning, was Gastropod on Arctic cuisine, which was fascinating) and then it autoplays the next one and it's my own voice coming out of the phone. Freaks me out every time.

I'm teaching a new course this semester, a 200-level speculative literature class, and I'm focusing it on fantasy. (I did SF last semester). Thought some of you might like to read along -- I may post notes occasionally.

To finish off my Intro to SF class, I'm having the students choose one novella each from this list and briefly present on it the last day of class.

Thanks to everyone who suggested novellas when I asked previously -- I did leave off some suggestions when I was completely unfamiliar with them...

Sewed an ombré leaves skirt, made a crown / halo, and and designed an outfit for Our Lady of Falling Leaves -- window decor for the new brick-and-mortar shop. Who knew window designing would be so much fun?

I'm thoroughly delighted to note that "Among the Marithei," first printed in Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine and then reprinted in Lightspeed Magazine, has been selected for The Best Science Fiction of the Year: volume 7, edited by Neil Clarke.

Recording a podcast this past weekend -- Benjamin Rosenbaum and I were GOING to talk about AI, I swear, but somehow early on we went into a tangent on building utopias and social class and a LONG thing about landlords and renters and morality thereof...

So I want to love Bluesky, but I usually write long posts, rarely short ones. I'm guessing if I post links to my longer FB posts, that will be annoying / not interesting? Is there any app that auto-divides up long posts into smaller chunks?

School board meeting tonight, so I'll spend some time prepping for that. Otherwise, I'm pretty tired after first week of teaching, so going to take it easy.

Re-reading Murderbot now (going to assign the first one to students), hoping to do some resin botanical jewelry making if I have the energy.

Breakfast today -- garden tomato, sliced and served on a toasted half-bagel with whitefish spread. Yumyum. What're you eating?

I'll include my own _The Stars Change_ on the list. I usually try not to assign my own fiction much, but I figure it's okay as an optional text out of a large set. And it *was* a finalist for various awards. Sri Lankans in space, an allegory for Black July, lots of LGBTQ+ representation.

SF novella recs? I'm teaching an Intro to SF Lit. class this semester, and I'm planning an assignment where they choose from a selection of novellas and present on them. Title / author / a line about why you love this novella, or think it'd be a good one to teach? (Ideally available free online.)

Just got here. Testing, testing. Houston, Houston, do you read?

(Tips welcome -- how are you liking this space? Suggestions for making the most of it? Are the algorithms as obnoxious as FB's for hiding things with links, etc.? Does adding a picture help visibility in the same way?)
