Do I feel guilty about reading a romance instead of something more literary? Nope. Like the author, “I read romance novels for the same reason I watch birds — for the sparks of joy, because I prefer to be happy when the world gives us so many reasons to be sad.” #BirdingWithBenefits #SarahTDubb

Didn’t plan it that way, but just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, my book club discussed Long Island, a grand excuse to bake chocolate Guinness cake. Doesn’t the frosting look like the head on a pint of Guinness? #longisland #colmtoibin #saintpatricksday #chocolateguinnesscake

I bought this romance by a Tucson librarian at Antigone Books in Tucson (yay for browsing at independent bookstores) and finished it during an unexpected snow day in Sedona. Loved how birding infused the fake lovers trope, and debut novelist Dubb is a new fave.

I’m intrigued with this display, but is it a case of “Do not try this at home?”

What is the cost of creating paradise? Are there “versions of Eden that weren’t founded on exclusion and exploitation, that might harbor ideas that could be vital in the difficult years ahead?” My second book in the Bookshop Santa Cruz winter reading program!

At one point this got so scary I almost didn’t finish, but I’m glad I couldn’t put it down. The underpinning of Navajo culture and Hillerman’s outstanding writing made it an ideal read for a Southwest road trip. #theblessingway #tonyhillerman #bibliophile

I know it’s corny, but the national parks really are our national treasure. Thank you to the ranger who recommended the Split Rock hike! #nationalparkservice #joshuatreehiking

I’m easily seduced by bookish romance (no surprise there), and this Beauty and the Beast mash-up by one of my favorite romance writers hit the sweet spot for me. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Just finished my first book in the winter reading program from Bookshop Santa Cruz. It's going to be a push this year for me to get to three, but based on this terrific novel, it'll be fun trying. #thecemeteryofuntoldstories #juliaalvarez #bookshopsantacruz #booklover #DiversifyYourBookshelf

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about,
ideas, language, even the phrase each other
doesn't make any sense. --
