#Hallyu, or the #Korean #Wave, is basically the spread of Korean pop culture. #Politics has definitely shaped how it travels, especially in Northeast Asia. Like when China blocked Korean content after THAAD, but fans still found ways to access it. Even if governments push, demand doesn’t disappear.

It feels like #cultural #appropriation in Kpop hasn't really disappeared. Artists and companies seem more careful now not necessarily out of understanding, but because backlash comes fast, especially in #Korea. A lot of the more obvious visuals from hip-hop culture feel toned down to not get hate.

It feels like one big reason the objectification in #Kpop has gotten more subtle is because it became low hanging fruit. People want to see real stories/real personality. So instead of obvious sex appeal, a lot of artists now play with confidence, attitude, or even irony to get their message across.

Considering the facts about #gender #relations in Korea, some #empowerment in #Kpop does feel like it’s mostly for show, but i dont think thats bad. Even if it’s part of the image, it can still give off confidence. If it connects with people and makes them feel seen, that’s still a kind of power.

Psy’s success in the US seemed to work because he came off as funny and harmless. The article from class makes it feel like he fit into what Western media already expected from Asian men, silly and not masculine. That might explain why his type of image was more accepted. #Psy #Kpop #OppaGangnamStyle

According to Jin and Ryoo, one big reason there's so much English in Kpop is because of "English fever." With more Americans and after Korea’s financial crisis in the late 90s, speaking English became more common and important. People saw it as a major key to success and so did Kpop artists.

#Blackpink #Rosé's appearance fee is crazy! In 2022, before viral sensation with Bruno Mars #APT, came out, Ross attended an event by #Tiffany&Co in Japan. Apparently, she stole the spotlight and was paid very well for doing such!

#JYP entertainment was founded by #Park #Jinyoung in May 1997. Originally named Tae-Hong Planning Corp, he later rebranded it after his own initials. Park Jinyoung debuted as a solo artist in the mid 90s and used that to leverage and build the company with a focus on training and producing singers.

In this skeet, i will be profiling the Empress of Trot, #Ju #Hyeon-Mi.

She debuted as a singer in 1984 with "#Couple's #Party", which casually sold 3 Million Copies! The following year, she released her first album which won her awards for #best #new #artist!

The role of the #idol star is changing. I think it's largely due to #social #media. Social media makes them feel close to fans, but their lives are still super different. Yet, they are held to the same #societal #rules and standards - and usually, more strict ones.

I read an article by #Kim #Seon-joo titled "Music and oppression in the 1970s".

She talks about how certain music brings her back to a political era. Specifically, how it brings her back to the dark history of South Korea during the 1970s,when it was under the oppressive rule of Park Chung-hee.

"Awareness is knowing your fandom is toxic and not trying to dismiss the reality with 'we have to protect the boys'" - @sugarsaranghaeee on X (formerly Twitter)

An interesting perspective that was shared and really makes you think about the reality of fandoms in Korea. Let's discuss 🧵

I agree with the idea mentioned by #StephenEpstein about whether it's reasonable or unreasonable for #KPop idols to be #nationalistic.
