Yup, I'd say King's Field is in the tradition of Japanese devs taking a really complex Western computer game and streamlining it intelligently for a console. The exploration in UU and KF feel very similar to me in an abstract way.
Here's a Japanese game guide book that had some UU stuff in it 😄
