Oh man...

Democratic House Rep. Sylvester Turner from Texas died last night at age 70.

His last words to his constituents were "don’t mess with Medicaid.”

RIP.

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

If we can make inclusion viable in the most extreme environments, just imagine what we could do down here.

If you have the means, support this org.

To be absolutely clear: Corruption is NOT good.

Just say no to bribing kleptocrats.

I’ve suspected we were heading this way for a while, and what truly offends so many of us about Trump is just that he’s just so much more transparent about it.
Chris Murphy: "We talk a lot about the coming dictatorship, but I think what's really coming is what you would call an oligarchy."

Saving this thread.
I have 214.6K followers, and I figure at least some of them are looking to gift books this holiday season, so:

HEY AUTHORS OF BLUESKY: In the comments to this post, tell us (briefly!) about your most recent book, and put in a link to where people can learn more and/or buy the book in question.

Go!

This future appeals to me, too. Deeply. Let’s say we can accomplish this vision, what then?

How do we collectively steer ourselves toward lives of joyful purpose, rather than hedonism and apathy? 1/
This is why the solar-punk future speaks to me. That’s right, you’re gonna have cute walkable towns with a legit train station. Kids will be able to roam safely on the streets. Everyone will have access to healthcare and a UBI. No more cowering before “the man” because we’ll have other options.
one of the things about the Green New Deal era of US climate politics that I miss has to do with this - felt like there was a real sense that political energy could and should be devoted to building actual stuff. still on that team

OK. Here’s my actual first post on Bluesky. I’m still skeptical, but @lizrodwell.bsky.social insists the conversations are better.

I don’t want a bubble, I want intentional, and solution oriented, dialog.

Is that possible?

Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1k/month. A year later, nearly half had housing.

They also had fewer ER visits, nights spent in a hospital, and jail stays.

The report estimates that this reduction in public service use SAVED the city $589k.

Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1,000 a month. A year later, nearly half of participants said they had housing.
Participants in Denver's basic-income program reported having more-secure housing, though results were similar in the trial and control groups.
