Kicking off our new @horizoneu.bsky.social project in Mozambique this morning. PEN CONNECT will co-create solutions to NCDs. With @dinabalabanova.bsky.social we’re working with a great Mozambican team here in Maputo.

We always say “never again”. Visiting Kigali’s Genocide Memorial today. The exhibit chronicles how European governments created the conditions for the killings, armed the perpetrators, and stood back when they happened. Plus ca change?

The greatest reward for an academic is seeing one’s former student (and even better if still a colleague) get recognition. Incredibly proud of Anna Odone profiled in @thelancetinfdis.bsky.social

On way home after 2 great days in Vienna discussing health policy with colleagues from ~30 countries at HSPM network. So much to learn from international comparisons.

Reading Tim Bouverie’s excellent book on WW2 - came across quote from a US Senator in 1940 who said that if Germany defeated UK it would be “unpleasant but not catastrophic” as British population “could be transferred to Canada”. Something for those who despise refugees to reflect on?

Do read the full report where we address this at much more length than can get into a single line. We did take advice. The U.K. situation offers challenges and opportunities

In Budapest for @horizoneu.bsky.social EUTOPIA-EAST project meeting. Truly humbling presentation from Ukrainian colleagues not just maintaining but strengthening and innovating cancer screening in the most difficult conditions

And well worth a visit (especially during the wine festival!)

I’m at yet another conference (this time in 🇨🇭) where a plenary speaker (African) is absent because he couldn’t get a visa.
This is a disgrace. And it’s a direct consequence of the pathetic failure by our cowardly politicians to challenge racism.

Since invoking Orwell seems to be in fashion, can’t help noticing that some form of speech are freer than others in England now.

The #FTWeekendFestival has to be one of my highlights of the year. From AI to domestic & geopolitics. Really should be near top of priority list for colleagues in public health in & around London
@paula171.bsky.social & I getting lots of ideas for follow up of our forthcoming book on AI in health

I’m in Toledo, where (at least at some times - can we leave the complexity aside for now) Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived in relative harmony - convivencia. Another reminder that things can go backwards

This short book by Vincent Delacroix is a moving reminder of the complex and multifaceted human impact of migration - told from the perspective of a French coast guard involved in the tragic drownings of those in a small boat in the Channel.

Matt, you raise important points, some we didn't have space to cover. However, note what we said about the advanced roles. We need serious discussion about medical reasoning for diagnosis. It's far more than following a checklist & there is NO substitute for grounding in pre-clinical sciences

It was a real privilege to give the laudatio for my friend and colleague Reinhard Busse in Berlin last night as he was awarded the Andrija Stampar medal by ASPHER. A fitting recognition of his leadership in public health. And always good to be back in one of my favourite cities.

On responding to far right parties … from Angela Merkel’s autobiography. It should be read by U.K. political leaders but I’d be surprised if it was.
