Germany and California are ideal partners. Aim to further deepen our relationship. Discussed with Gov Newsom @governor.ca.gov how to achieve a new quality in our relations. Will look at initiatives to realize our potential in key sectors such as tech, science and energy. Thank you for having me.
Grateful to meet with @germanambusa.bsky.social Andreas Michaelis to further strengthen California's strong ties with Germany.

As one of California’s long-standing partners on climate and trade, we need to continue to build on — not endanger — our relationship.

I deeply regret the US decision to impose tariffs on EU automotive exports.

Tariffs are taxes – bad for businesses, worse for consumers, in the US and the EU.

The EU will continue to seek negotiated solutions, while safeguarding its economic interests.

I’m currently in Munich and deeply shocked by a horrific attack here today where a perpetrator ran a car into a group of people - many injured, some severely. This comes after an equally terrible vehicle-ramming attack in Germany in December. My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones.

Yesterday, I gave a lecture in the medieval town of Goslar. It took place in a beautiful Romanesque church in the old city. After the event 300 people were served soup. A tradition which was established for long winter evenings. And the Harz mountains were indeed covered in snow. Simply beautiful.

I was delighted to open the iconic Caspar David Friedrich exhibition at New York’s Met! It puts a great German Romantic painter on the map in the US, and a fascinating period of intellectual explosion in our history. A testament to the exceptional cooperation between our museums – and our countries.

Today marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. For Germans, the remembrance of the Holocaust and fight against antisemitism is of unique significance.

Today, we also think of the Israeli hostages still in the hands of Hamas, among them many Germans. They need to be released.

The ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas is great news, a glimmer of hope in challenging times. I met with former hostages and their families and was deeply moved by their pain and trauma. Now, our focus must be on bringing the remaining hostages home and increasing aid for Gaza.
