I just feel so sad that after all the efforts of Sir John, Prescott, Merkel, Estrada, Gore, Figueres, Mann, Santer, and absolutely countless others we are where we are. A rabid, climate sceptic, US government, the temperature pushing 1.5C, & no sign that we will get back on track in time.... 7/7 end

Worth seeing and there are a few weeks left in London. I suspect it will go on tour after that as it is very popular. Of course, it is very topical, and that gives it an extra edge. In fact, I wish they had done a 5-minute epilogue at the end, to bring the story up to date, and give closure. 6/7

If you want more details, my @johnrayinitiative.bsky.social colleague, Karen Vincent, wrote an excellent review when it was in Stratford: jri.org.uk/a-review-of-...

Angela Merkel and John Prescott had more sympathetic portrayals. As we were walking out, I overheard several people saying that they didn't know of Prescott's involvement. He died last year, and indeed he was a major figure in the fight against climate change. 4/7

One character the play got completely wrong was Sir John Houghton, who I worked with for some years. He was a great man, and not at all alarmist, as he was sometimes portrayed. I wrote an obituary for @johnrayinitiative.bsky.social the day after he died: jri.org.uk/sir-john-hou... 3/7

It was an excellent play, although the language wasn't great (swearing!). It took us from before the Rio Earth Summit up to COP3 in Kyoto. The central character was Don Pearlman, an American lawyer and fossil fuel lobbyist, who greatly influenced the discussions and slowed down action. 2/7

Yesterday we went to see "Kyoto" the Royal Shakespeare Company play about COP3 and the events leading up to it, at Soho Place in London. So, it's a fairly rare drama about climate change. Oddly, I was lecturing on this area only the week before at Oxford Brookes University. A 🧵 1/7

My first lectures at Oxford Brookes University were in 1989, and here I am back for my annual session on climate change policy and politics. Pretty topical at the moment. Every year these lectures change quite a lot, but with all that's happening.....

I just remembered these from a trip to Vaxjo in Sweden some years ago. Linnaeus went to school there, where he developed his interest in Botany. My Swedish isn't up to translating the plaque!
