The recent discovery of fungus growing within the core of Chernobyl, possibly as hostile an environment as there could be to organic life on earth. To me this suggests another possibility.

This quite eloquently matches my belief as well.
It is entirely possible that the universe is teeming with Intelligent life, but the vastness of distance and time,. prevents them from ever communicating.
