You are right. Journeys between city pairs are most important, but long-distance journeys are important too. It will take some time, before the market can make people prefer over-night journeys (because they are cheaper) over flights (which are currently subsidized by tax-exempted fuel).

The TGV from Strasbourg to Hendaye was full (both to Paris and from Paris to Hendaye). On the overnight journey from Hendaye to Lisbon it was a full Talgo train. A full train should be cost-effective, if not profitable.

It‘s well known that flights are too cheap, but this will hopefully change. I went to Lisbon on a night train from Strasbourg via Hendaye. The sleeping compartments were sold out. I would do it again. Very pleasant journey. First class from Strasbourg in 2019: 200€. That’s not too expensive.

What about Hendaye-Lisbon? This would be very important for people from Germany, France, etc. traveling to Portugal.

dervé is strange. desvez is obviously *DISVAGATUS meaning crazy, sohaiz is souhait in modern French (SUBTUS + HAITAN, cognate of German heißen). The form ending on Z (Short for t+s) is the nominative singular.
