If they did allow it before EES you could really spend unlimited time in the EU as a UK citizen, because you'd have no stamps and there would be no way to count the days spent.

Not in the EU though. In PT for the UK egates you still have to get your passport stamped manually after. They need to check the amount of time you have spent in the EU, the egates can't do that (until the EES). There is no central DB of time spent in the EU without checking passport stamps manually
