Design tip: When in doubt, leave it out.

Design is as much about what you remove as what you add. Focus is your friend.

Design tip of the day: Question things!

Don’t assume. Don’t default. Don’t just accept “that’s how it’s done.”
Curiosity is a designer’s superpower. 👇🧵

Something I hear a lot: “Let’s add it - it adds value!”
Cool. So does a toaster. That doesn’t mean it belongs in your product.

Too easy? People get bored.
Too hard? People give up.
Just the right challenge? That’s when the elusive flow state kicks in.
You can’t push people into flow—but you can create the right environment for it.

The tyranny of the majority.

AI generally leans on what's most available, not what's most accurate. Easy-to-find info > high-quality sources.

Similar, it rates frequently published info over the latest insights. Mainstream info > recent discoveries.

When electric cars first came out, their designs were intentionally distinct. The early Prius? The GM EV1? They weren’t just cars, they were statements. The design cues shouted: “This is the future.”

It was part branding, part necessity, and part early-adopter signaling.

AI today is well beyond the buzzword status. While the number of products heavily positioned as 'AI-powered' is only growing.
Though labelling your product as 'AI' may not be the panacea you're looking for: www.growthunhinged.com/p/ai-messagi...

One of the few articles around product development that I continue to come back to: Intercom's several years old blog post on why great PMs don't spend their time on solutions. But rather on really understanding the problem.
Great PMs don't spend their time on solutions
A deep understanding of the problem that each project sets out to solve has underscored Intercom's progress to date. This is how we approach it.

AI is rapidly getting commoditized. AI-driven writing or image tools will continue to be more seamlessly integrated into operating systems. (Or as in the case of the MS Copilot key, even in the hardware.)

The benefits of offering these features in your product will keep decreasing.

The benefits and drawbacks of (over)confidence continues to be an intriguing topic.
A recent article in the Economist https://buff.ly/4i5bmiH provides a great short read around how it applies to managers and CEOs. 🧵👇
