meant to say "Mica's Kylie-esque voice" ffs anyway here's all that on one grid, 10s at the top, row of 9s, two rows of 8s, a row and a bit of 7s, 6, 5, miss a few, 2

1. Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

Somehow missed their debut the other year and almost missed this too. How to explain it other than to say it sounds like old Windows OSs looked. By track 4, the single 'Image' with its clever reversed structure in the middle I knew this was special.

2. Charli XCX - brat

The album she was born to make. Recontextualises even her early work as essential parts of the process to get to here, with the defining statement of what pop music is and can be in the 20s. Like all truly great albums it can't be separated from the genius packaging too.

3. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28 340 DEAD"

As you'd expect it's heart breaking, haunting, gut punching. But also there's moments of real hope and beauty, which only serves to make it even more powerful and connected to the reality that it's a statement on

4. Geordie Greep - The New Sound

A jazz prog rock latin fusion concept album about incels. Got to be honest, this one took me a while. You know where single Holy, Holy is going but the way it's delivered, so good. Suppose with a name like that you've got to be stupidly gifted to survive

5. Jack White - No Name

His most White Stripes album since they disbanded, but takes all he's learned from his more out there solo works. It may be 'just' straight up blues rock but everything about it is so finely honed it's almost supernatural. Maybe there's life left in rock music after all

6. Kendrick Lamar - GNX

As if ending the Certified Paedophile wasn't enough for one year. The first time there's never been a concept or narrative or emulating another artistic field behind a Kendrick album but the meaning behind it is clear as ever. Yet more proof he is the goat

7. Xiu Xiu - 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto With Bison Horn Grips

One of the more accessible albums from the experimental 'NIN meets The Cure meets traditional Indonesian gamelan' band, doesn't ever water down what they do musically but there's a lot less bleak and a lot more catchy melodies

8. Chelsea Wolfe - She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She

The queen of goth. My favourite album of this sort of music since the ††† debut a decade ago. Trip hop, industrial, darkwave, goth rock, and more all find their way in and she ties them all together
January 10, 2025 at 9:00 PM
9. Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere

Blending death metal with full on Waters era Pink Floyd prog rock odysseys. Maybe a little too full on lol, I'd mark it down for how blatantly it takes from Wish You Were Here if that album wasn't so important to me and they didn't pull it off so well
January 10, 2025 at 8:53 PM
10. The Cure - Songs Of A Lost World

Smith saying "Most people know us for Friday I'm In Love" then dropping their darkest, least pop album in decades lol. Inexplicable production issues aside this is sprawling, cosmic, gorgeous and devastating. Smith's voice continues to defy age

11. Confidence Man - 3am (La La La)

They've always balanced camp 90s euro dance revivalism with contemporary 'proper' dance. And I love both so it was a no-lose situation for me regardless, but they've continued to keep one foot in each world and gotten even better at it. Popworld, anyone?
