The Production of Intertextuality in Vergil’s Commentators The question of Vergil’s relationship to Greek literature is usually framed in terms of reception: what use did he make of earlier Greek models, and what do later Greek writers in turn owe to him? In other words, the scholarship seeks to reconstruct linear paths of influence of one author on another, which can then be incorporated into larger narratives of literary history. Yet since our access to ancient authors is almost exclusively through their works, and we can only read whatever works happen to survive, such clear lines can rarely be drawn: even when there is an indisputable intertextual connection with Vergil’s corpus, the exact originative relationship usually escapes our grasp, and so remains a matter of speculation. This paper seeks to understand intertextuality precisely as the product of speculation, made under historically conditioned circumstances, rather than a set of definite facts waiting to be established by the literary historian. This is not to say that intertextuality is invented arbitrarily, but that it arises through interpretative work that skillfully articulates connections which previously were only potential, making explicit what had been unspoken or even unthought. These interpretations can be studied, and their skillfulness evaluated, without assuming a single timeless standard by which to judge them. With this approach in mind, we can revisit many passages in the ancient Vergilian commentaries whose usefulness—for source criticism, textual constitution, fragment collections, and so on—seemed slight or already exhausted, and consider them afresh. Why did the commentators explain Vergil through intertexts which seem unlikely or incongruous to us? What relevance did they see in them, and why did they pass over other links that we lionize? What was their purpose, who was their audience, and what does it tell us about the meaning of the Vergilian corpus to its ancient readership?

Those are always the conditions of studying the past, and the problem is most acute when we talk about a concept that has been completely naturalized in our times, not when it is already highly contested, like ‘transness’. It is cisness that historians project everywhere, and which most of them will not name even when they are talking about it, because they cannot imagine anything outside of it.
