I recently joined Christopher Murphy on the DOING TIME, TALKING CRIME podcast to discuss my research on image-based sexual abuse (IBSA).

In the episode, we discuss the meaning and motives of IBSA, its effects on victims, and explore the legal and social challenges that surround this crime.

Allround lovely time in Berlin this week with old friends, new friends, and stunning spaces.

Great to have presented my work on online wrongs and personhood during the Max Planck Law conference in Berlin this week, and thank you to Cristina Valega Chipoco, @simgans.bsky.social, and Valerij Zisman for such a fun and inspiring panel on “doing justice to rights”.

As I was saying: I saw the most stunning Matisse exhibit at Fondation Beyeler, and the rest of the gallery still equally breathtaking.
Reposting, and so that I keep bluesky safe by not posting adult content: this time I made sure to censor the pink nude's abstract nudity 🤪

Saw the most stunning Matisse exhibit at Fondation Beyeler (and the rest of the gallery wasn't so bad either)

I know this is a mistake but it is an unfortunate one: 'The impact of violence against women and girls (VAWG) on victims, their families and their communities cannot be *underestimated*,' - first half-sentence from the 2018-19 CPS report on Violence Against Women and Girls (working on femicide)

I gave a paper on the right to privacy as both 'a right to be seen' and 'a right to not be seen all the time'. Thanks for inviting me to think about my work in a new context at this digital monitoring workshop @hadassanoorda.bsky.social & Jeevan Hariharan — many thought-provoking papers these 2 days

I had so much fun presenting my paper “Towards a Relational Model of Consent” at the SAFI Conference! I argued for viewing consent as a relational act, not just an individual decision—shifting focus to whether the act itself is consensual. Thrilled with the great discussions & I'm excited for Day 2!

Exactly one year ago I defended my thesis on the wrongs of image-based sexual abuse. Since then, I’ve graduated from Oxford and moved to Max Planck Institute CSL. A lot has changed, many things have not. I'm still working on ibsa, writing a book, arguing with legislators & talking with the public.

Thank you to the criminal law research group at Max Planck CSL for engaging with my paper 'Fake images, real wrongs? A relational approach to wrongness of deepfake pornography' today.

Lots on defining 'real images', image-based abuse as a subject for criminal law & separation of law and morality.

I inherited my godfather's stack of scrap paper (deemed 'waste' in the clearing of his house) and now I'm writing an article on deepfakes, image-based abuse, and criminal law on the back of August 1999 print outs of computer programming (printed to be read and fixed by hand, probably in the garden).

I’m reading Simone de Beauvoir’s letters to Nelson Algren. I always have some awkwardness reading published letters. These were compiled by her daughter, does that mean SdB would have been fine with the publication? Or does it not matter / do we get to decide for/about loved ones when they’re gone?

Potato potato (10 October vs 12 December Freiburg canal views)
December 14, 2023 at 11:15 PM
For reference: the view from the pathway in October

The canalside pathway in Freiburg *may* not be immediately recognisable as such atm, and I’m not nearly as tempted to read my book by the water as I was in September, but what a beautiful view! And the roaring is quite impressive too. Quite a lovely afternoon stroll sight (but DON’T USE THE PATHWAY)

The most beautiful sight this morning, when in a misty Oxford the gates to Trinity College were covered in frozen spider webs.

when we might also consider that sending intimate images doesn’t affect your right not to be subjected to an unwanted publications for them. In other areas of sexual offences we see this too: only today I came across another ‘still not asking for it’ image:

And it isn’t a one-off either. A quick search shows that it’s the typical response. Headlines of “drugged and forced into prostitution“, “a victim of human trafficking”, “had to receive clients ‘or would not survive’”. All of them have “😆” as the most used reaction.
November 6, 2023 at 11:12 AM
On Dutch Fb, the most popular response to news that a reality tv star was sexually exploited, is “😆. People comfortably use their real name to do so. She isn’t believed, “she must have wanted it and regrets it now”. It’s disgusting. The message is: her trauma is entertainment.
