For pelvic pain sufferers living in Canada, a University of Manitoba researcher is leading a study on mental health experiences and any unmet needs with regards to care (i.e. need for interdisciplinary supports).

Thought I'd share!

My mum and I took this trip to Prince Edward County exactly four years ago, as of this August long weekend. It's hard to believe that not that long ago, we were paddling together, staying up late watching TV, going out for dinner.

What I wouldn't give for just one more little weekend trip.

This was a very simple request, however, note the submission date for this FOIA to a U.S. agency – July 8 – and the completion date... July 9. Truly amazing stuff 😂 Canada could never.

In other ATIP news this week, CMHC continues to love its white redactions... Here's a portion of a response I just received. I have run into this issue with them before and previously requested copies of records without negative redactions (which they provided), as is required by the Treasury Board.

It's a good time to sign up for a @winnipegfreepress.com subscription! The current deal is less than $3.50 per week for half a year. And as a reminder, in Canada, you can write off your digital news subscriptions to so-called qualified journalism outlets – of which we are one – on your taxes!

Winnipeg 🚨 There is an air quality warning in effect.

"Limit time outdoors. Reschedule or cancel outdoor sports, activities and events ... If you must spend time outdoors, limit the time as much as possible." It also suggests using an N95, if you must be outside.

Let's all not forget that Meta continues to block any and all news from being shared on Facebook and Instagram, meanwhile more than 17,000 people are being evacuated from wildfire zones in northern Manitoba, where, like a lot of northern places, Facebook is an important place to get news and info.

“You don’t know all the ways you’re going to grieve the loss of somebody until you have to,” Tara said. “I don’t just grieve Conor — I grieve losing my baby. I grieve the young man he was becoming and all the things we won’t get to experience with him.”

I also have to thank Jesse Winter for the stunning, sensitive photographs of Conor's parents, Tara and Kaylan Rae, that accompany this story. I'm glad we got to spend some time with them in one of the family's favourite spots – a misty trail near their house, as well as in their Coquitlam home.

“Conor suffered a violent assault, electric shock, and then death by way of gunshot wound at the hands of persons who ought to have kept him reasonably safe,” reads a lawsuit filed by the family of Conor Rae, who was fatally shot by an RCMP officer in 2023.

One of the federal government's largest investments in response to the MMIWG inquiry is mired with bureaucratic delays and red tape. Of $420-million dedicated to building new shelters for Indigenous women, for example, just $75.44-million has been spent.

A senior manager, however, told a more junior CMHC employee to "hold off" providing this information to the applicant, saying that she'd been told by a senior vice-president that their denial emails were "too direct" and so the reason may need to be removed.

Another applicant, this one based in Manitoba, was told their project didn't focus enough on children. Internal CMHC emails show that the "main concern" was actually that the focus of the transitional shelter would be on victims of human trafficking.

Taking some time out every weekend to enjoy a winter Prairie sky – and the fresh air that goes so well with it. Last night's was particularly good. It doesn't paper over the tough feelings that come and go and come again as I return to work thinking about lost loved ones, but it is a small balm.

15/ Longtime lawyer Donald Worme, who is no stranger to inquests involving police, was stunned by this. “That the powers that be would permit such an exercise and then have it (be) completely empty. I just feel for the families that have lost loved ones.”

12/ I found that in every case where an expert was called, that included testimony from a police use-of-force instructor. In each of those cases, the instructor affirmed the officer’s decision to use lethal force, including seen below.

8/ From our first phone call, Evan’s mom, Vivian Caron, explained how she felt left out of the inquest process at every turn, particularly when the province denied her request for funding to help cover the costs of having a lawyer. She’s now without one.

7/ Researching delays, it was clear that one yet-to-be-held inquest was particularly delayed: the joint inquest into the deaths of Evan Caron (below), 33, and Adrian Lacquette, 23, both Anishinaabe from Treaty 2. The pair were shot by Winnipeg police officers about a week apart.

5/ I made a spreadsheet listing all the people fatally shot by police in the province since 2003 – and tracked the timelines for all related inquests. This screenshot, showing the number of days since these men died, is current as of today. Their inquests haven't been held.
